Q. How do eggs become contaminated with salmonella?
A. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the bacterium salmonella enteritidis silently infects the ovaries of healthy appearing hens and contaminates the eggs before the shells are formed. The hen encounters the bacteria in its environment. The bacteria invades the hen's reproductive and digestive systems. Most types of salmonella live in the intestinal tracts of animals and birds and are transmitted to humans by contaminated foods of animal origin. Bacteria is also present in the intestines and feces of infected humans and animals, including chickens, and can be passed to the eggs when chickens sit on them.
Q. I hear on TV about receiving assistance from the flooding this summer, but they don't seem to give any information about who we call or go to on-line. Do you know who we contact?

The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time.
