Q. Does Bristol Palin and her boyfriend both have brown eyes and
their baby have blue eyes? Is that possible?
A. It does appear they both have brown eyes and yes, it is
possible that their baby has blue eyes. For example, "B" is the
gene for brown pigment and "b" is the gene for no pigment, or blue.
Everyone has two genes for each trait, one from the mother and one
from the father. The brown eye color trait can be a "BB" gene or a
"Bb" gene. If the mother and father happen to both have the "Bb"
gene, and the baby gets one gene from each parent, then it is
possible the child got the "bb" gene, making their eyes blue.

Q. I see Young Plumbing received the contract from Larson
Construction for the new school replacing Black Hawk Elementary.
There is also a Young on the school board. Isn't this a conflict of
interest?
A. Larson Construction, which submitted the lowest bid for this
project, controls the selection of the plumbing subcontractor.
Waterloo Community Schools spokeswoman Sharon Miller said this
selection is not influenced by the Board of Education or even known
by it when the bids are submitted and approved. Furthermore, since
Mike Young is not an owner or employee of Young Plumbing, there
would be no actual conflict of interest. However, Miller said
whenever there is even an appearance of a potential conflict of
interest from his job as an attorney, Young recuses himself from
the vote on the issue.
Q. Is it legal to put the kindergartners at Kingsley into the
portables they are bringing in for classrooms?
A. Yes. Waterloo Community Schools spokeswoman Sharon Miller
said the classrooms will be fully equipped with safety and
communications technology, rest room facilities, and temperature
control systems.
