Q: Could you please explain what charter schools really are? Are they for people heading for college or do they need a special IQ to go there and do they take the special needs children?
A: Charter schools are open to the public but are not operated by the public school system. They cannot charge tuition or have special requirements for enrollment and must take any student that enrolls. They receive the same percentage of the per-pupil funds a public school district would receive, but do not receive money for facilities or start-up costs, which require private donations. Charter schools are required to submit annual reports to the local school board and state’s Department of Education.
Q: What are they doing at Hansen’s Conoco station?
A: Hansen’s Dairy Cedar Falls location is installing new gas tanks and pumps to provide E15 fuel, now required by state law, as well as diesel fuel. The fuel pumps should be back up and running by mid-June.
