Q: What is crypto mining that they’re talking about in Cedar Falls?
A: A company named Simple Mining, which mines Bitcoin, proposed to build a cryptocurrency mining facility next to where Cedar Falls Utilities plans to build a power plant in the city’s industrial park. The Cedar Falls City Council rejected zoning changes that would allow cryptomining facilities and data centers within city limits May 20. Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining is a difficult topic to grasp but the process validates cryptocurrency transactions on a blockchain network – or a ledger with transaction data – and adds them to a distributed ledger.
