ALTOONA, Iowa – Oct. 21, 2026 – Crews will close eastbound Interstate 80 from the Northeast Mixmaster to U.S. 65 (Exit 142) in Altoona from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. tonight and Thursday night, weather permitting. These closures may delay drivers, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Grimes construction office.
Crews will pave the eastbound lanes of I-80 during the closures. Eastbound I-80 will also close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night from Sunday night, Oct. 25, until Friday morning, Oct. 30.
Drivers should follow the marked detour route. It uses southbound Interstate 235, Euclid Avenue, Hubbell Avenue and U.S. 65 to reach eastbound I-80.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
