Q: Why are a large Trump/Pence 2020 sign and the defunct Waterloo police griffin logo still displayed prominently at the Black Hawk County Republican headquarters on Ansborough Avenue in Waterloo?

A: “We have the Donald Trump sign up because he was the presidential nominee in last election,” said Todd Obadal, treasurer and former co-chair of the Black Hawk County Republicans. “We support the republican candidates, and until 2024 rolls around he’s our (presidential) candidate.

“As far as the griffin, we support the Waterloo police and the men and women who served under that insignia. We believe in the true heritage of the griffin, that it stands for vigilance and protection, and that is our way of showing public support for the police in Waterloo.”

Q: Do the Cedar Falls PSOs carry their fire gear in their squad cars in case of an emergency call or do they have to go back to the station to change?

A: Public Safety Director Jeff Olson: “All Public Safety Officers are certified by the state as ‘Firefighter One’ and carry their fire gear in their squad cars so that they can respond directly to the fire scene.”

Q: If you are diagnosed with Parkinson’s, does coffee add to the tremors?

A: According to a 2019 study, “Sex-dependent Effects of Coffee Consumption on Newly Diagnosed Parkinson’s Disease,” published in the journal BMC Neurology, drinking coffee may reduce tremors in Parkinson’s disease patients, but only among men. And the more coffee participants reported drinking, the lower their tremor scores tended to be. Furthermore, a large number of epidemiological studies report coffee consumption appears to reduce or delay the development of PD and caffeine is most likely the causal factor. A 1998 study published in the journal Neurology reported two percent of normal controls noted that drinking coffee made their hands shaky. Eight percent of essential tremor and 6% of Parkinson’s disease patients thought that coffee worsened their tremor. In formal tests, a single oral dose of caffeine (325 mg) did not increase physiologic, essential tremor, or parkinsonian tremor at 1, 2, or 3 hours after ingestion. Caffeine only infrequently induces tremor in normal people, and it does not exacerbate pathologic tremor.

Q: Why can’t seasonal workers who work seven months out of the year get unemployment for the other five months?

A: To be eligible for unemployment benefits in Iowa, you must have worked and earned a certain amount of wages in work covered by unemployment insurance in the last 15 to 18 months. Questions about benefit eligibility are best answered by Iowa Workforce Development.

Q: Is Club Car Wash owned by Menards?

A: No, it’s an unrelated company that just happens to be located near Menard’s in Waterloo. According to its website, Club Car Wash was founded as a family-owned small business in 2006 as Tiger Express Wash in Columbia, Missouri.
