Q: WWE wrestlers are displaying the Bible verse John 3:16. Can you print what that verse is?
A: Here it is from the New International Version: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Q: Is it true the Irish band Rend Collective will be at Irish Fest next year?
A: It looks as if the festival is still working on the lineup for 2018, and the band doesn’t have it listed on its website either.
Q: At the Hawkeye Community College farm there is a cow with a bulls eye painted on the side of it. What is the reason for the bulls eye?
A: The caller might be referring to a fistulated steer at the farm. The animal was operated on in March. That involved making a 4-inch diameter incision into his side and then removing that portion of the skin and flesh, called a fistula. A rubber flange, or cannula, that fits around the incision, was installed after the surgery. The hole was then plugged with a big stopper that can be removed. The opening is in the steer’s stomach.

Q: I’m a fan of the roundabouts in Cedar Falls. I thought the reasons they were being put in was for safety and would eliminate T-bone type accidents, but now I see there are several left turn lanes by College Square Mall. Are these an invitation for side impact accidents? Can someone with the city comment on this?
A: Cedar Falls Community Development Director Stephanie Houk Sheetz replies: “As a part of the corridor planning, the city balanced the safety of major intersections with the access requests of businesses along University Avenue. There are several three-quarter access points (a left turn only) for business access. Restricting the movement to one type of turn only, helps to decrease the potential for an accident.”
Q: In a Courier obituary in the “preceded in death by” section isn’t it redundant to list that a 96-year-old person, who recently died, was preceded in death by their parents? I’ve also seen it listed this way in other papers.
A: It was precisely for that reason that we used to have a rule that we would include parents in that section only for people younger than 65. But so many people complained and told us it was inaccurate and disrespectful, we changed our policy on it several years ago.
Q: Can the police legally hail someone’s vehicle down to take it to chase someone?
A: According to Capt. Dave Mohlis with the Waterloo Police Department, “Legally, yes, but it is not an accepted practice by most law enforcement agencies. The last time this occurred in Waterloo was back in the mid-1970s.”
Q: On “Fixer Upper” on HGTV do all the furnishings they put in the house to show it stay in the house after the new owners take over the property?
A: No, according to interviews done with homeowners who’ve been on the show, although they are free to buy any pieces they want to keep if they have any money left.
