At REM Iowa, participating in Chamber of Commerce community events has become an important extension of both our workplace culture and our mission. We participate to strengthen teamwork among staff, build relationships outside the office, increase awareness of REM Developmental Services, and, most importantly, demonstrate to the individuals we support that community involvement can be fun, meaningful and inclusive.
These events give our team the opportunity to connect in new ways while building trust and communication that carries back into the workplace. One of the most rewarding experiences has been watching the individuals we support cheer us on, celebrate friendly competition and remind us that true community involvement is about participation, inclusion and shared experiences.
Their enthusiasm inspired us to create the annual RDS Cup, which brings together REM Developmental Services programs from across Iowa for a day of games, teamwork and friendly competition. Designed for all ability levels, the event encourages confidence, sportsmanship, new friendships and a sense of accomplishment for everyone involved.
We encourage other Chamber members to take part in community events. The impact extends well beyond a single day, strengthening workplace culture, improving morale, increasing community visibility and building meaningful relationships.
When people come together through shared experiences, barriers begin to disappear and connections grow. Community is built through participation, and these moments remind us that when we work together with respect, inclusion and a spirit of fun, everyone benefits.
