There’s something different about Memorial Day morning in Clear Lake. Before the boats fill the lake and before summer unofficially kicks off, people gather quietly along the seawall. Veterans stand shoulder to shoulder. Families line the sidewalk. The Clear Lake High School Band tunes up near the water. Flags move in the breeze, and the pace of the lake town shifts completely.
Memorial Day in Clear Lake isn’t just an event on the calendar. It’s a tradition generations have grown up attending. Hosted by VFW Saratoga Post 4868, the community’s annual Memorial Day observance honors those who lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. While the exact beginning of the ceremony stretches back further than many can remember, longtime residents know it as one of the community’s most enduring traditions.
A ceremony along the water

The morning begins at the lakefront seawall with a ceremony overlooking the water that has shaped so many memories in Clear Lake. The program includes the raising of the American flag by local Boy Scouts, patriotic music from the Clear Lake High School Band under the direction of Holly Prier-Lloyd, and the casting of a memorial wreath onto the lake in honor of deceased Navy servicemen and women.
As “Taps” echoes across the water, the crowd grows still. Boats pause. Conversations stop. Even the lake seems quieter for a moment. It’s one of those traditions that reminds you Memorial Day was never meant to be rushed past on the way to a barbecue or a long weekend.
The walk in the cemetery
Following the seawall program, attendees are invited to continue to the cemetery ceremony and march to the Lincoln Monument. There, veterans organizations, community members, and students participate in a program honoring Americans lost in conflicts spanning from the Civil War to the Global War on Terrorism.
Roses and memorials are placed for each era of service. The ceremony also includes student readings, including The Gettysburg Address and a reflection on “The Importance of the 21 Steps,” referring to the solemn tradition observed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The service concludes with the folding of the American flag, an honor guard salute, and Echo Taps performed by the band.
A community tradition that continues
What makes Memorial Day in Clear Lake special isn’t elaborate production or spectacle. It’s the consistency of it. Families return year after year. Veterans continue showing up to honor fellow servicemembers. Students take part in readings and music. The community gathers not because it has to, but because it matters.
As America approaches its 250th anniversary, traditions like this feel even more meaningful. They connect generations, preserve local history, and remind communities why remembrance still deserves space in everyday life.
