Traveling is a wonderful way to experience different cultures while also developing a greater appreciation for our own. I have never really been one to keep a bucket list, but my scratch-off travel map (compliments of my daughter) seems to be a pretty strong motivator to visit as much of the world as I can. In 2018, I joined the opportunity to travel to Japan with the Greater Mason City Chamber of Commerce, and it turned out to be a truly memorable trip.
Japan is a country filled with tradition, rich culture and incredible experiences. We had the opportunity to wear traditional Japanese dress and attend an authentic tea ceremony. Food in Japan is truly an art, with everything from sushi and sashimi to hot pots and beautifully prepared bento boxes. And, of course, matcha ice cream is a must-try. Japan is also one of the friendliest and cleanest countries I have visited. Everywhere we went, there was a sense of pride and professionalism. Many workers in immaculate uniforms, always courteous and welcoming. Beautiful Japanese gardens, Shinto shrines, Imperial palaces, teahouses, sumo wrestlers and bustling markets are just a few of the many cultural attractions.
Some of the highlights of our trip included exploring Tokyo. We drove go-karts through Shibuya Crossing, attended a baseball game complete with cheerleaders and keg girls, and hiked on Mount Fuji. In Kyoto, we hiked through the beautiful Fushimi Inari Taisha and wandered through the historic Gion District in search of authentic geisha going about their work. The upcoming itinerary may include different experiences and destinations, but that is part of what makes travel so exciting. Every adventure offers its own unique highlights.
Group travel definitely has its advantages. I have enjoyed traveling with the Greater Mason City Chamber of Commerce on several adventures, and the organized tours make it easy to simply enjoy the experience while someone else takes care of the details.
If Japan has ever been on your travel wish list, or if you are simply curious about what this experience could look like, I encourage you to attend the upcoming information session. It is a great opportunity to learn more, ask questions and see if this adventure might be the next country to scratch off your map.
