UNI Campanile

This week Flashback Friday is featuring the 1975 photo of the University of Northern Iowa's Campanile. The bell tower was the result of almost 12 years of planning and work. It was completed in September 1926, featuring 15 bells mounted in the belfry, each commemorating something special to the university. According to one tradition, a woman did not become a full-fledged co-ed until she had been kissed at midnight under the Campanile. In 1979, the Alumni Association breathed life back into that tradition and couples still gather to kiss at the stroke of midnight on Friday evening of Homecoming week.
