Barcelona has sealed the signing of left back Marcos Alonso. Alonso had terminated his contract with Chelsea before the end of the transfer deadline on Thursday and was free to sign with another club. Barcelona signed the 31-year-old Spaniard on a contract until the end of the season and with a buyout clause of 50 million euros. Alonso's father played for Barcelona from 1982-87. Alonso is the seventh signing by Barcelona in this transfer window. He spent six seasons with Chelsea and began his career with Real Madrid before playing in England and Italy.

Abner Mares is a former three-division world champion who has practically set the blueprint for a champion boxer moving intelligently to the next stage of his life. But Mares wasn't quite ready for that next stage to start yet. He's returning to the ring after a four-year, three-month absence to face Miguel Flores on the pay-per-view undercard of the high-profile heavyweight showdown between Andy Ruiz Jr. and Luis Ortiz in downtown Los Angeles. Mares is a boxing commentator now, and he has invested his money smartly to provide a comfortable life for his two daughters. But he's still eager to fight.

Trying to hang on to their slim lead in the AL Central, the Cleveland Guardians lost two starting pitchers to injury. Zach Plesac has a broken hand and Aaron Civale is dealing with forearm inflammation. Cleveland leads Minnesota by just one game. Plesac was supposed to start Friday’s opener, but the right-hander was scratched. He broke his hand punching the ground in frustration last week against Seattle. Rookie Cody Morris will make his major league debut against the Mariners. Plesac has been plagued by a lack of run support this season and is just 3-11 with a 4.39 ERA in 23 starts. This will be Civale’s third trip to the injured list this season.
