WILLMAR, Minn. — Willmar plated runs in its final five at-bats Friday to outscore Waterloo 10-6 in a Northwoods League baseball matchup.
It was the 10th straight defeat for Waterloo (1-10 second half, 11-35 overall) and the seventh straight victory for Willmar (8-2, 30-15).
The game began as a pitching dual between Bucks starter Matthew Perea and the Stingers’ Sam Gardner as neither team scored in the first three innings.
Willmar broke through with three two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Waterloo didn’t get its first hit against Gardner until the fifth when Myles Emmerson singled, Ethan Ibarra doubled and a pair of sacrifice flies plated runs to make it a 3-2 game.
The Stingers added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth on five singles, then scored single runs in the sixth and seventh.
Trailing 9-2, the Bucks stormed back with a four-run eighth that included an RBI single by Luke Bowerbank and a three-run double by Patrick Ferguson. That made it 9-6, but Waterloo couldn’t get any closer and Willmar’s Davis Elliot smashed a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to set the final margin.
