WILLMAR, Minn. — Willmar overcame an early 2-0 deficit and held off Waterloo 4-3 Thursday night in a Northwoods League baseball game.
The Bucks jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the first inning when Trey Leonard led off the game with a single and later scored on an error. Tate Samuelson then plated Angelo Altavilla with a base hit.
The Stingers (7-2 second half, 29-15 overall) made it 2-1 in the fourth on Nic Hernandez’s solo home run and pulled even in the fifth on a single, a double and an RBI groundout.
That ended an effective start on the mound by the Bucks’ Javin Drake of Wilton and Willmar scratched out runs in the sixth on a walk and two singles and in the eighth on a walk, an infield error and an RBI single by Hernandez that made it 4-2.
Waterloo tried to put together a ninth-inning rally. Luke Bowerbank led off with a single and Altavilla doubled to put runners on second and third. Samuelson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Bowerbank scored on a groundout, but that was all the Bucks could get.
Now 1-9 in the second half of the NWL season and 11-34 overall, Waterloo plays at Willmar again Friday night before returning to Riverfront Stadium Saturday to host Eau Claire at 6:35 p.m.
