• Waterloo Black Hawks forward Matej Blumel has been added to tonight's 2018 USHL/NHL Top Prospects game roster.

Blumel, from the Czech Republic, has five goals and four assists in his first United States Hockey League season. He will join Waterloo teammates Jared Moe, Ben Copeland and Jack Drury in the game.

Ice fishing

  • The 11th annual Hank's Live Bait and Tackle Ice Derby is set for Jan. 27 on Brinker Lake at George Wyth State Park.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest fish in five species categories and six tagged fish will give anglers the chance to win mystery prizes, including a $5,000 shopping spree at Hank's.

The day also includes dinner and raffles. Cost is $30 in advance and $35 on the day of the derby. Mandatory registration is from 6-8 a.m. at Hank's with the weigh-in closing at 4 p.m. at Hank's.

  • The Hawkeye Community College golf program has announced the signing of former Aplington-Parkersburg athletes Cade Alberts and Luke Pruisner.

Alberts is a three-time all-state golfer who was sixth in the 2017 state meet. Pruisner earned all-state honors twice for the Falcons.


  • Waterloo West's Kaden Karns lost a 5-3 decision to Cedar Falls' Jakey Penrith during last Thursday's dual meet in Cedar Falls.

The Courier incorrectly reported the final score as 5-2, but Karns was awarded a penalty point at the match's conclusion.
