WAVERLY — Waverly-Shell Rock will be sending returning state placewinners back to the Class 1A boys’ state tennis tournament. The Go-Hawks swept district singles and doubles championships Thursday night on their home courts and also advanced to the team substate round.
Senior top seed Adam Ernsting of W-SR earned his second district singles title in as many years as he defeated Waterloo Columbus freshman Daniel Buchanan in the championship match, 7-5, 6-4. Buchanan was sharp against Ross Gentry of Decorah, 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinal round as he qualify for state in his first attempt.
Ernsting’s Go-Hawk teammates Luke and Ryan Willis stormed past Clear Lake’s Jacob Peterson and Mac Adams, 6-1, 6-1 to capture their first doubles district title. The Willis cousins reached the finals with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Grinell’s JP Dugas and James Trettin.
The sweep of singles and doubles lifted Waverly-Shell Rock to the team title with 25 points. Columbus finished with 17 points and will host third place Grinnell in the preliminary substate team competition 10 a.m. Saturday at Byrnes Park.
Cedar Falls junior Joe Schneider reached the semifinals of the Class 2A district singles tournament in Marshalltown before falling to Linn-Mar’s Luke Van Danslear, 6-2, 6-1 in the state qualifying round.
The Tigers also received a first round win from Cedric Hassman who was eliminated by Jackson Eells of Linn-Mar in the second round, 6-0, 6-0.
Waterloo West’s lone first round winner was Zach Heyerhoff who won a third set tiebreak before Van Danslear eliminated him in the second round.
The Waterloo Columbus girls’ tennis team used its depth to defeat Class 2A power Cedar Rapids Washington, 5-4, Thursday night in Cedar Rapids.
The Sailors recorded convincing wins in the number four through six singles matches from Franny Roche, Karlee Sinnott and Brianne Eighme before winning two out of three doubles matches to clinch the meet. Olivia Fain and Lauren McManus won 10-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Roche and Sinnott posted a 10-1 victory in the No. 3 match.
