WATERLOO — Waterloo Columbus joined a variety of local softball teams in advancing one step closer to the state tournament Friday night.
Class 2A’s No. 5 Sailors reached their third regional final in as many years with a thrilling 4-3 win over Ogden and will face traditional power and No. 12 BCLUW 7 p.m. Monday at Columbus with a trip to state on the line.
Ogden gave Columbus all it could handle in this game as the Sailors trailed 3-2 after the top half of the sixth inning before responding with two runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead for good.
Alivia Schultz led the Columbus offense as she finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Pitcher Kayla Sproul held Ogden to four hits and walked none.
In Class 2A, Region 4, South Winneshiek’s season ended with a 15-1 loss to No. 7 Dyersville Beckman.
Crestwood advanced to the Region 4 final in Class 3A with a thrilling 3-2 win over No. 15 West Delaware. The Cadets will travel to No. 7 Center Point-Urbana, a 10-5 winner over New Hampton, 7 p.m. Monday.
Iowa Falls-Alden also advanced in Class 3A with 4-1 win over Hampton-Dumont. IF-A will face No. 3 Sioux Center, a 9-2 winner over East Sac County.
In Class 1A, No. 13 North Butler moved on to face Clarksville in the Region 4 final with a 5-3 win over Algona Garrigan. Top-ranked Kee High ended Starmont’s season, 12-0, in a Region 5 semifinal.
