WATERLOO — Waterloo West did not have a very long work night Thursday.
The Wahawks needed just 2 1/2 innings to top Cedar Rapids Washington, 14-0, in a Class 5A regional at West.
Christina Campbell threw a no-hitter, while the Wahawks had innings of six and eight runs in the rout.
Campbell struck out eight of the 10 batters she faced with the only Warrior base runner reaching on a first-inning error.
“I just wanted to do good for my team,” said Campbell. “I just knew I had to do my job and strike some people out and that my team would do their job and hit.”
The Wahawks didn’t have to hit much en route to victory but when they did they made it a highlight. With a 1-0 lead and a runner on second, West’s Colleen Duffy smacked a screaming line drive home-run to left field to make 3-0 in the first. It was Duffy’s first dinger of the season.
“I had been waiting for it and to do tonight in the regional game is something special,” said the Wahawk junior.
West would add three more in the inning, benefiting from Washington errors, and a Sabrina Anderson double to go up 6-0. In the bottom of the second the Wahawks added eight more runs with just three hits, one coming on Duffy’s two-run double that made it 14-0.
Campbell finished off their Mississippi Valley Conference foes with three more strikeouts in the top of the third to complete the no-hitter and season sweep of the Warriors.
“We’ve played Washington (0-34) before and I was hoping to grab another win against them,” said Waterloo West coach Ashley Reimer. “I was just happy to see our girls didn’t let up and kept working hard like they always do.”
West improved to 10-29 with victory and advance to play third-ranked Cedar Rapids Jefferson (34-4) Saturday at Jefferson at 7 p.m.
“We need to keep focused and go into the game knowing we’re going to win,” said Reimer. “I think anytime you win it keeps the the team wanting to play and working towards that goal of reaching state.”
West dropped both their regular season contests with Jefferson earlier this season, but Duffy likes the under the radar role it presents.
“A lot of people are expecting us to lose to Jefferson but I feel like since we’re the underdogs we can surprise some people,” Duffy said.
