WATERLOO — Nearing its 70th year, the Clyde Artus Award continues to draw attention to the best and brightest athletes in the metro area.

The 2017 class of prep MVPs joins this accomplished group.

They are Sam Schillinger and Ally Conrad of Cedar Falls, Omar Begic and Leah Frost of Waterloo East, Sam Gerst and Allison Trenkamp of Waterloo West, Kaleb Boleyn and Grace Surma of Waterloo Columbus and Luke Zwack and Sydney Nystrom of Waterloo Christian.

The award is named for Clyde Artus, a Courier writer-photographer who died in a 1950 plane crash. He was best known for his coverage of high school sports.

Cedar Falls

Sam Schillinger

THE LINEUP – Participated in cross country and track and field.

AN HONOR ROLL – Iowa’s Gatorade Male Cross Country Athlete of the Year, placed third and second in his final two state cross country meets. School record-holder in the 1,600, 3,200 and 4x800. Four top three finishes at the Drake Relays, including a win in the 3,200. Placed among the top four at the state track meet in six races. Member of a 4x800 relay that finished ninth at New Balance Nationals. Finished with a 4.07 cumulative GPA.

ON DECK – Will attend the University of Arkansas and compete in cross country and track and field.

Ally Conrad

THE LINEUP – Particiapted in basketball, volleyball and golf.

AN HONOR ROLL – Started on three state tournament basketball teams, reaching the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship game. Two-time second team all-conference and All-Metro selection. Selected to play in the 2017 IGCA all-star game.

ON DECK – Will attend Wartburg College and compete in basketball.


Kaleb Boleyn

THE LINEUP — Participated in football, wrestling, golf and baseball.

AN HONOR ROLL — Four-year wrestling letterwinner, placing as high as sixth at the state meet. Three-year letterwinner and two-year starter in football, earning an All-Metro selection. Two-year baseball letterwinner.

ON DECK — Will attend UNI and Allen College to earn a biology major and BSN in nursing.

Grace Surma

THE LINEUP — Participated in soccer, softball and basketball.

AN HONOR ROLL — Served as team captain in basketball, softball and soccer. Competed on three state soccer-qualifying teams and was a two-time Des Moines Register elite all-state selection. Five-time softball letterwinner, earning All-Metro honors. Helped Columbus qualify for its first state tournament this summer. Three-year basketball letterwinner.

ON DECK — Will attend Loras College, majoring in kinesiology and participating in soccer.


Omar Begic

THE LINEUP – Participated in football, wrestling and track and field.

AN HONOR ROLL – Three-time state wrestling qualifier, placing seventh twice. Finished with 120 career wins. Holds school record with a seven-second pin. Two-time first-team all-conference selection. Two-year football letterwinner. Academic all-conference honoree. Lettered one year in track and field.

ON DECK – Will attend Wartburg College and compete in wrestling.

Leah Frost

THE LINEUP – Participated in bowling, softball and volleyball.

AN HONOR ROLL – Individual state bowling champion as a junior. Helped East win a state bowling title in 2016 and finish runner-up in 2017. Earned first-team all-state and MVC Bowler of the Year honors. Five-year letterwinner in softball, including two honorable mention and one first-team All-Metro selection.

ON DECK – Will attend Mount Mercy and participate in bowling and softball.

Waterloo Christian

Luke Zwack

THE LINEUP – Participated in basketball.

AN HONOR ROLL – Four-year letterwinner. Team MVP and second-team all-conference selection as a senior. Holds the school’s single-game scoring record with 49 points. Averaged 26.3 points, leading team in rebounds, assists and blocks his senior season.

ON DECK – Will attend Hawkeye Community College.

Sydney Nystrom

THE LINEUP – Participated in basketball, volleyball, track and field and trapshooting.

AN HONOR ROLL – Four-year basketball letterwinner, earning second-team all-conference and All-Metro honors. Four-year volleyball letterwinner, honorable mention all-conference and All-Metro. Two-year participant in track and field and trapshooting. Earned 25/25 shooting award for clay targets.

ON DECK – Will attend Ellsworth Community College, majoring in sports training and participating in basketball.


Sam Gerst

THE LINEUP – Participated in football, wrestling and track and field.

AN HONOR ROLL – INA all-state linebacker and three-time all-district and All-Metro honoree. Finished senior season with 86 tackles, 11 for loss, for the 8-2 Wahawks. Two-time state wrestling qualifier, placing fifth his senior season. Honor student.

ON DECK – Will attend Ellsworth Community College and compete in football.

Allison Trenkamp

THE LINEUP – Participated in volleyball, track and field, softball and basketball.

AN HONOR ROLL – Two-year volleyball starter and honorable mention all-conference selection. Academic all-conference. Four-year, multi-event state track and field qualifier. Capped senior season with sixth-place finishes in the state 4A 4x200 and 4x100. Qualified for the Drake Relays 4x100 and placed seventh in the Drake 4x200 as a senior.

ON DECK – Will attend Upper Iowa University and compete in track and field.
