INDEPENDENCE | On the verge of its second postseason appearance and first since 1985, the Independence football team is without its head coach and athletic director.

The Independence school board terminated the contract of Brandon Krusey Thursday night. Food service director and assistant girls’ basketball coach Jessica Weber's contract was also terminated, both effective immediately. Assistant coach Justin Putz will take over the football program for the remainder of the season.

The Mustangs locked up their playoff spot Friday night with a 28-0 victory over Maquoketa. They will open the Class 3A playoffs Wednesday night at Washington.

Krusey was in his third season at Independence. He led North Tama to a Class A state runner-up finish in 2008 and also made Grundy Center a playoff team.
