WATERLOO — There was a sense of deja vu for the Waterloo Warriors in their matchup with Kansas City Saturday.

For the second straight day, the unbeaten Jets scored a second-period goal to break a 1-1 tie, then added an insurance score in what became an identical 3-1 win at Young Arena.

Noah Watkins, who scored the go-ahead goal Friday, assisted on the decisive score Saturday, pushing a perfect pass to Landen Kehl, who fired a shot past Warrior goalie Dawson Sturch 1:08 into the second period. Kehl scored just seconds after returning to the ice following a slashing penalty.

Ian Jones then extended the Kansas City lead with a goal at the 10:21 mark of the second period.

After pulling their goalie, the Warriors appeared to get within 3-2 on a Keegan Smith goal with 31.5 seconds remaining in the third. But the apparent score was waved off when officials ruled Smith had pushed the puck in with an indirect kicking motion.

“I wasn’t in agreement with it,” Warrior Coach Brian Cook said of the call. “If our guy ... is stopping to get the puck, he’s still just stopping. It’s part of the hockey play. Pretty tough call for us to take, obviously, at that point of the game.”

The Warriors finished with a 34-30 shot advantage, but found the back of the net just once on a first-period goal by Kyle Cowell.

Cook said he was happy to see his offense be aggressive, but stressed the importance of taking better shots.

“We had some guys who were shooting it from out farther than they needed to shoot it,” he said. “They probably needed to get closer to the net.”

Cook said his team also needed to be more disciplined after being called for seven penalties Saturday.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly identified Jason Katz as the players who scored the nullified third period goal.
