Bermel state golf

Cedar Falls junior Ben Bermel hits an approach shot from the fairway on hole No. 7 Saturday at the Class 4A state golf meet. Bermel finished tied for fifth individually to lead Cedar Falls.

MARSHALLTOWN — Ben Bermel finished just one stroke shy of joining the party. A four-way playoff decided medalist honors during Saturday’s Class 4A boys’ state golf meet at Marshalltown’s Elmwood Country Club.

A junior from Cedar Falls, Bermel finished in a tie for fifth place alongside Brock Barnhart of Cedar Falls Kennedy with a 3-over-par, 36-hole total of 143.

Cole Davis and Nate Vance of Marshalltown and Benjamin Krapfl and Jake Marvelli of Indianola finished just one stroke ahead of Bermel and Barnhart in a first-place tie at 142.

Vance quickly settled the playoff in impressive fashion. The senior from Marshalltown drove the green on the first Par-4 playoff hole and made an eagle.

Bermel entered Saturday’s round as the tournament leader after carding a 2-under-par 68, one shot better than Davis. His lead evaporated with a string of four consecutive bogeys down the stretch, but Bermel finished with a birdie on his 18th hole as he just missed out on the playoff.

Class 4A’s team race also had a tight pack from second through ninth.

Cedar Falls placed seventh with a score of 614 (308-306) that was only five strokes back of fifth place West Des Moines Dowling and 16 back of runner-up Johnston. Host Marshalltown ran away with the title as the Bobcats recorded a consistent 582 (291-291).

Trevor Heinen of Cedar Falls tied for 27th at 155, while junior classmate Joe Dean recorded the Tigers’ top Saturday score of 74 and finished tied for 30th with a 156 total.

Cedar Falls senior Brandon Nelson tied for 50th with a score of 160.
