Northeast Iowa has a strong presence on the all-state boys’ and girls’ soccer teams released this week.

Earning Class 1A first-team honors from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association are Waterloo Columbus’ Kiera Cabera and Denver’s Johnnie Hill.

Union Community of La Porte City has a pair of first-teamers in Class 2A with record-setting Courtney Powell and Emma Rottinghaus, while Waverly-Shell Rock’s Sarah Campbell also made that team.

Cabrera was a consistent threat for 14-5 Columbus and finished with 16 goals and 23 assists. Hill ignited a potent Denver attack with 42 goals and 14 assists as the Cyclones went 17-3.

Nobody in the state put up numbers like Union’s Powell, who finished with 80 goals and eight assists. Rottinghaus set up many of those scores as she compiled 15 goals and 38 assists for the 18-3 Knights, who fell in the 2A state tournament title game.

Waverly-Shell Rock’s Campbell tallied 13 goals and 13 assists for the 14-4 Go-Hawks.

The Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association Class 1A boys’ all-state team features Columbus standout Colton Beyrle. Iowa Falls-Alden’s Marcos Vila made the 2A first team, and Waterloo West’s Adin Turanovic is a first-teamer in Class 3A.

Beyrle helped Columbus to a 12-8 season and anchored a stingy defensive corps that allowed just 1.38 goals per game. Vila had a huge season for 21-1 Iowa Falls-Alden, leading the state by a wide margin with his 62 goals and 27 assists. Turanovic led 15-6 Waterloo West with 12 goals and seven assists.

The IGCA’s Class 1A second team is loaded with area standouts. Columbus’ Grace Surma and Olivia Fain made the squad, as did Denver’s Carlie Knoll and McKenna Pollock, Hudson’s Emma Eden, and Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Kat Wild and Maddie McMartin.

Other area boys’ earning all-state honors include Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Erik Knaack (honorable mention), along with Decorah’s Brent Schaeffer (second-team) and Keshawn McCain (honorable mention).
