- A retirement party is planned for Sunday, Nov. 15 for legendary Cedar Falls High swimming coach Dick Marcussen.
Marcussen's distinguished career includes nine girls' state championships, five boys' state titles, dozens of coaching awards, a 334-60 dual meet record (heading into the 2015 prep girls' season), 43 all-state swimmers and 33 NISCA All-Americans. This season is his 47th as the head coach of the Tiger girls' team.
The retirement party will take place from 1-4 p.m. at the Holmes Junior High cafeteria. A brief program will take place at 2 p.m., and the public is invited to attend.

- University of Northern Iowa junior Kelsey Kirchoff has been named to the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Scholar-Athlete team.
Kirchoff is one of 13 student-athletes on the women's honor team. To make the squad, runners must finish among the top 20 at the conference championship, hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or better and be at least a sophomore in athletic and academic standing.
Kirchoff, a native of Denver, placed 11th at the MVC Championships last weekend. She ranks fourth on UNI's all-time list for 5K races (17:32.77) and second at the 6K distance (21:01.50).
- Hoover Middle School's 8th-grade Future Wahawks boys' basketball team went undefeated to win the Mid America Sports tournament in North Liberty last weekend.
Team members are Carter Maske, Mondre Lagow, Nick Pepin, Antonio Alexander, Isaiah Johnson, Caleb Haag and Jaden Keller. The team is coached by James Johnson and Francisco Pepin.
