WATERLOO — Waterloo West girls’ basketball coach Tony Pappas admits his team still has a lot to work on.

However, following a 51-42 Mississippi Valley Conference victory over Dubuque Wahlert Tuesday at Siddens Gymnasium, Pappas said he was pleased with the amount of grit his team continues to show.

“That was a very scrappy Dubuque Wahlert team, and we just had to grind it out tonight,” Pappas said. “Our players came through and made some plays. A lot of bounces went their way, but give Wahlert credit, they battled us the whole way.”

The Wahawks (7-6 overall, 2-4 MVC) had to scrap and claw for everything they got. The lead changed hands eight times through the first quarter and into the early stages of the second quarter.

The Golden Eagles (3-9, 0-6) took a 15-14 lead with 7:12 to go to halftime, but Jada Draine nailed a 3-pointer on the other end for West 30 seconds later and the Wahawks never trailed again.

“When they challenged us we reacted and made the big plays,” Pappas said of what he liked most of his team.

Wahlert did tie it at 21-21, but Aleah Cook hit a pair of free throws with 2:13 left until halftime to put West back on top.

West led just 35-33 after three quarters, but with Wahlert forced to play more aggressively on the defensive end, the Wahawks went 10 of 11 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter (18 of 22 in the game), which helped them overcome an off night from the field when they made just 15 of 42 shots.

Defensively, West also contested a lot of Wahlert shots as the Golden Eagles shot just 16 of 53 from the field.

“Again, we just kind of grinded it out,” Pappas said. “That is a good win. Like I said, we made the plays when we had to and I feel good about that.

“That is our second one in a row and puts us above .500.”
