WATERLOO — Valley Lutheran cleaned off the glass and swept aside Waterloo Christian Tuesday night in a metro girls’ basketball clash of Iowa Star Conference rivals, 39-13.

The Crusaders gained an early 16-4 advantage after the first quarter, largely by putting back their own misses.

“We’ve been working on getting those second shots and rebounds and it showed up tonight in the game,” said Valley Lutheran head coach Hannah Krenz.

The second chances kept coming in the second quarter as the Crusaders built a 26-9 halftime lead. In the second half, Valley Lutheran’s defense made sure the Regents didn’t make a run.

“Our big focus tonight was to keep them on the outside and the girls did a good job,” said Krenz. “Everyone pays attention to the offense, but I was so proud of our defense tonight, that’s where we did phenomenal.”

Emma Armbrecht led the Crusader offense with 15 points, including 12 in the first half when Valley Lutheran took control.

Valley Lutheran improved to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play while Waterloo Christian continues to search for its first win of the young season.

Regents head coach Carmen Wimpf is more focused on development within her team than wins.

“We’re excited just to see any little baby steps right now,” said Wimpf of a team that started three freshmen Tuesday. “All of my freshmen have only 12 games of junior high coming in.

“To see them doing little things from scoring to setting screens is a huge accomplishment right now. We just need to build more self-confidence and learn to let things fly and try those things they wouldn’t usually try.”
