WATERLOO — Waterloo West struggled to measure up to No. 2-ranked and defending state champion Iowa City West Friday.

Iowa City West’s 6-foot-8 Patrick McCaffery and Seybian Sims combined for 44 points to help send the Wahawks to a 79-55 defeat on their home court at Siddens Gymnasium.

“They are a championship team and they know that down the stretch you have to be playing your best basketball,” Waterloo West coach Cliff Berinobis said. “They did a nice job finding some weak spots and they got tougher as the game went on.

“We just didn’t match up well. They don’t turn the ball over, either, and we cannot afford to make mistakes on our end.”

Several of those mistakes came early in the first period when the Trojans (15-3, 12-2) went on a 19-0 run that stretched into the first minute of the second quarter.

Waterloo West got the run stopped and held its own for the rest of the half with Isaiah Johnson scoring 13 of his 19 points in that span.

“We knew this would be a very hard, physical game for us,” Johnson said. “It becomes difficult to get things done when they get off to a big lead like they did. We just were not scoring so I started taking the shots and getting the points. When things like that happen someone just has to start taking the shots.”

Iowa City West took a 15-point lead into the halftime break then put together a 15-4 run in the third period.

Carondis Harris-Anderson registered 14 of his game-high 20 points for the Wahawks in the second half.

“We have to get used to being in these situations and learn how to handle it,” Berinobis said. “It was a lesson for me to learn, as well, and I have to figure out how to use it. We just didn’t play our best when we needed to.”

With a few games left before tournament play begins, the Wahawks feel there is still time to piece it all together.

“We just have to forget about this,” Johnson said. “We will talk about it for a bit and then get back to practice and do what we can do.”
