DUBUQUE — Dubuque Hempstead never let Waterloo West get its offense rolling Friday as the Mustangs eliminated the Wahawks from the Class 4A boys’ basketball postseason with a 63-50 substate win.

Tenth-ranked Hempstead (17-5) broke on top 15-9 after the first quarter and led by just three at halftime, 25-22. The Mustangs outscored West 38-29 in the second half to advance to Tuesday’s substate finals.

Kalen Burt led West (13-11) with 12 points and Mario Wright had 10 on a night when Hempstead limited the Wahawks’ leading scorer, CaRondis Harris-Anderson, to eight points.

EDGEWOOD-COLESBURG 69, WAPSIE VALLEY 57, OT: Edgewood-Colesburg knocked Wapsie Valley out of the Class 1A playoffs with an overtime win Friday.

Ed-Co advances to Monday’s substate final against Don Bosco with a 20-4 record, while Wapsie Valley’s season ends at 17-8.
