DES MOINES — Iowa City West couldn’t defeat Iowa City High during the regular season.

Friday night with the Class 5A state championship at stake, the Trojans found a way with a defensive effort that shut down the Little Hawks, 56-45.

Led by Iowa State recruit Ashley Joens, top-ranked City High brought a 76.8 scoring average into the game. Iowa City West allowed just 29 through the first three quarters and 6-for-25 shooting from 3-point range Friday.

Offensively, Lauren Zacharias scored 15 points, Logan Cook 14 and Cailyn Morgan 10 while Rachael Saunders grabbed 12 rebounds. Joens finished with 26 for the Little Hawks, 14 of which came in the fourth quarter.

Iowa City West maintained a double-digit lead for much of the game before City High drew within 39-34 early in the fourth quarter. The Trojans (19-7) didn’t let the Little Hawks (25-1) get any closer.
