WATERLOO — Dubuque Hempstead went on a 16-2 run between the third and fourth quarters, pulling away for a 63-47 win over Waterloo East in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball matchup Tuesday.

The Mustangs went on an 8-0 run early in the third, but the Trojans were able to respond, scoring the next five points to get within 40-39.

But behind the shooting of Lucas Daux, who hit three three-pointers in the third quarter, Dubuque Hempstead put together what proved to be the decisive scoring surge.

With a comfortable lead, the Mustangs relied on their defense to close things out. Playing with a considerable size advantage, they were able to consistently close off passing lanes, forcing 17 East turnovers.

“Their 1-3-1 zone and their length obviously bothered us,” Trojan Coach Steve McGraw said. “We didn’t adjust to it very well.”

Keith Johnson led all scorers with 26, while Lucas Daux and Connor Daux added 16 and 12. The trio combined to hit 21 of the Mustangs’ 24 field goals.

Tyrese Nickelson paced the East offense, finishing with 21. Fifteen of his points came in the first half, where he hit 5 of 6 from the field and 4 of 5 from behind the arc.

Nickelson’s play was a major reason the Trojans were able to grab a 28-26 halftime lead against a Hempstead squad that had won 10 consecutive games coming in.

But ultimately, the upset bid fell short, and though he was happy with how his team played early, McGraw says the overall performance left something to be desired.”

“Anytime you’re (up) at halftime you’ve got to be fairly pleased,” he said. “We played pretty well. Just not in the second half.”

Jordan Jackson also scored in double figures for East, finishing with 12.

The 6-12 Trojans fall to 2-11 in conference play. They host Cedar Falls Friday.
