WATERLOO — A furious finish wasn’t enough to negate a slow start for the Waterloo East boys’ basketball team in a 75-66 loss to Dubuque Senior in Thursday’s regular-season finale.

The game had the look of a blowout early as the Rams, who came in with a record of 17-3, went on a 21-2 run early. Senior, which shot 9 of 12 from the field in the first quarter, pushed its lead as high as 20 in the second quarter.

But behind a smothering defense that came out of the locker room with great intensity, the Trojans forced seven turnovers in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 49-42.

The Ram lead dwindled all the way to three before they finally closed things out behind the play of Noah Carter. The sophomore forward finished the night with 29 points and 10 rebounds.

The Trojans got an even more impressive performance from their own sophomore star, Tyrese Nickelson, who led all scorers with 32 points, 17 of which came in the fourth quarter.

Already averaging more than 23 points per game coming in, Thursday’s performance capped a terrific regular season for the explosive guard, and his coach didn’t hold back in singing his praises afterward.

“Tyrese Nickelson is one of the best players that has ever played here and he’s only a sophomore,” Coach Steve McGraw said. “He’s the real deal.”

McGraw was nothing but positive in assessing the performance of his team, which he believes is headed in the right direction despite a difficult regular season that ended with a 6-15 finish.

“I’m extremely proud of our kids for how they battled and came from behind,” he said. “I couldn’t be more proud had we won.”

McGraw’s players are also optimistic things are on the upswing as they turn their attention to the postseason.

“We’re getting better and better every game,” Nickelson said. “I think we’re feeling pretty good going into district.”
