DES MOINES — Aplington-Parkersburg and Don Bosco of Gilbertville finished their 2017-18 seasons on a winning note Thursday with third-place victories at the boys’ state basketball tournament.

Aplington-Parkersburg put together a big fourth-quarter to overtake Sheldon, 65-52, while Don Bosco also rode a strong second half to a 61-51 win over Remsen St. Mary’s.

APLINGTON-PARKERSBURG 65, SHELDON 52: Sheldon led Aplington-Parkersburg 46-44 after three quarters of the Class 2A consolation game, but the Falcons turned up the defensive pressure and heated up from long range to win going away.

A-P (25-2) finished the game with nine 3-point baskets and recorded assists on 16 of their 24 field goals.

Alec Oberhauser finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, four blocked shots and three steals for the Falcons, Carter Cuvelier posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Dylan Ellis chipped in 12 points.

DON BOSCO 61, ST. MARY’S 51: In the matchup for third place in Class 1A, Don Bosco trailed by two points at halftime, but outscored St. Mary’s 34-22 in the second half to cap a 24-4 season with the highest finish in the program’s history.

The Dons opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run to take the lead and hit 15 of 16 second-half free throws to protect it. Don Bosco finished 20 of 21 from the free-throw line for the game.

Jack Kelley and Zach Nie finished with 24 points apiece to lead Don Bosco. Sean McFadden had seven rebounds and four assists.
