GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center exploded for 98 points Monday as the Spartans began Class 1A boys’ district basketball play with a 98-52 triumph over Waterloo Christian.

The Spartans (6-16) topped the 80-point mark for the second time this season and second game in a row after an eight-game losing streak.

Grundy Center jumped out to a 27-9 lead after the opening quarter and stretched it to 49-24 by halftime.

Luke Zwack had a big night for Waterloo Christian (0-22) with 38 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

NASHUA-PLAINFIELD 42, CLARKSVILLE 40: Nashua-Plainfield got a last-second lay-up from Isaac Chambers and stayed alive in the Class 1A boys’ district basketball tournament Monday with a 42-40 win over Clarksville.

Chambers finished with a game-high 11 points for the Huskies (7-15), who trailed 22-18 at halftime and throughout much of the second half before taking control in the closing minutes.

Nashua-Plainfield advanced to face Don Bosco Thursday in Ackley.

Regular season

WAVERLY-SHELL ROCK 65, LINN-MAR 48: Class 3A’s top-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock finished off its regular season with a non-conference road win at Class 4A Linn-Mar Monday, 65-48.

The Go-Hawks (19-1) finished with four players in double digits, led by Austin Phyfe with 15 points. Jacob Bahe added 13 and John Stensland and Luke Velky chipped in 11 apiece.
