WATERLOO — On a day when the legacy of late Waterloo East Coach Larry Joens was commemorated, Joens’ grandson honored his memory in style.

Unfortunately for the Trojans, Nick Joens plays for West.

Joens went 2-for-3 and blasted a two-run home run in the fifth inning, leading the Wahawks to a 9-1 win over their crosstown rival.

Prior to the game, Joens and several members of his family took part in a ceremony honoring Larry, a longtime East coach who passed away in April.

“It was an emotional night,” Joens said. “It meant a lot because a lot of family that had never seen me play before got to see me and I happened to play really well.”

While Joens swung a big bat, the Wahawks finished with just seven hits, three of which came in a scoreless seventh. For the most part, West’s scoring was the result of defensive blunders by East.

One day after committing four errors, the Trojans had six more Tuesday. They had a particularly hard time fielding bunts, as two of West’s runs came off of three-base errors on bunts.

Despite some control issues, West pitchers Mondre Lagow and Noah Susong were able to work out of several jams, as they combined to throw a four-hitter. Lagow struck out the side in order in the first inning and finished with seven strikeouts in just four innings of work.

West, which had lost 12 straight entering the week, defeated the Trojans for the second time in as many days.

“(I’m happy with) our competitiveness, West coach Andrew Meister said of the recent effort. “Guys came out fired up, we had some really good at-bats and we took care of business.”

Things continued to go south for the Trojans, who have now lost 20 of their last 21 games.

“They want to win, they have the drive to win, we’ve just got to find a way to win,” Trojan coach Garrett Ramsey said of his players. “We’ve got to stay fundamentally sound and play fundamental, errorless ball games and put together a whole game.”

Dylan Gehrke drove in the Trojans’ only run with a fifth-inning single. He had two of East’s four hits.
