RUNNELLS — Waterloo West continued its end of the season surge Friday night by upending Southeast Polk in a Class 4A substate baseball opener, 4-1.

It was the third straight win for the Wahawks, who were just 5-29 before closing the regular season with wins over Crestwood and Decorah. Southeast Polk finished its season 29-12.

West (8-29) advanced to face Iowa City High (23-17) at 7 p.m. Monday in Iowa City. The Hawks routed Cedar Rapids Kennedy 11-3 in their substate opener Friday and edged the Wahawks in a midseason doubleheader, 10-6 and 8-6.

MARSHALLTOWN 2, CEDAR FALLS 1: Dru Dobbins smashed a two-run homer in the third inning and Marshalltown made it stand up for a 2-1 substate win over Cedar Falls Friday.

The Tigers had just taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI hit by Tate Johnson.

Cedar Falls starting pitcher Tanner Schiefelbein allowed just four base hits. The Tigers managed just three hits against the Bobcats’ Nate Vance, who struck out eight and walked just one, and were unable to take advantage of six Marshalltown errors while stranding nine baserunners.

Cedar Falls finished its season 11-26 while Marshalltown advances with a 19-18 mark.

C.R. PRAIRIE 13, WATERLOO EAST 1: Third-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie rolled past Waterloo East in the opening round of substate play to improve to 31-8 on the season.

The Hawks led 1-0 after the first inning before blowing the game open with three runs in the second, six in the third and three more in the fourth. Harrison Cook pitched three no-hit innings with nine strikeouts before turning it over to Blake Wheeler for the last two innings.

East finished with just two base hits and ended its season with a 1-37 record.
