Semi-pro football team Eastern Iowa Storm held tryouts at the Cedar Valley Sportsplex in January.

WATERLOO | The Cedar Valley Storm is a collaborative effort of new friends Tim Cummings and Ryan Richmond.

Richmond is a former club rugby player at Iowa State who played offensive line for the Cedar Valley Charge last season.

Cummings is a former prep football player from Hudson who began playing semi-pro football when he joined the service out of high school. His first team was based in Fayette, North Carolina, while he also spent a handful of years playing for the local Cedar Valley Vikings team that folded around 2011.

Cummings was the defensive coordinator for the Cedar Valley Charge, and will serve as the East Iowa Storm's owner and head coach. Richmond, a software test technician for DISTek Integration in Cedar Falls, is the Storm's Director of Business operations.

"I just love this game," said Cummings who has assembled a six-man coaching staff. "I've loved it all my life and this has been kind of a dream. It's been a stressful dream. But it's all culminating right now and Ryan has been fantastic. "

Cummings and Richmond's first piece of business with the Storm was joining the Midwest Football League based out of Topeka, Kan. The 14-team league features a 12-game schedule, and single-elimination playoff with teams from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa. Newton hosts the league's only other Iowa team.

The Storm's season opener is May 30 with a home opener slated for June 20 in Independence. Home games will be Saturday at 6 p.m.
