CEDAR FALLS — Missouri State hit a big shot in the closing seconds of regulation and went on to defeat the University of Northern Iowa women’s basketball team in overtime Friday, 78-75, in a battle for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference.

UNI (12-9, 7-3) took a 17-7 first-quarter lead and still owned a 21-13 advantage midway through second period when the Bears hit six consecutive shots and went to halftime with a 27-26 lead.

UNI turned a Missouri State turnover into a pair of free throws by Sharnae Lamar for a 68-65 lead with :23 remaining, but Liza Freundt buried a 3-pointer with :20 left for Missouri State that got the Bears (15-7, 8-2) to overtime.

The Panthers fell behind 77-70 in the extra period, but got within 78-75 and had a chance to tie it, only to see Amber Sorenson’s 3-point attempt miss its mark as time expired.

UNI hosts Wichita State Sunday at the McLeod Center.
