DES MOINES — University of Northern Iowa sophomore Austin Heitland put together a strong opening day and stands third at the midway point of the Drake Relays decathlon.

Heitland, from AGWSR High School in Ackley, placed second in the 100-meter dash (11.09), eighth in the long jump (21-3.50), seventh in the shot put (36-8.25), fourth in the high jump (6-0.50) and won the 400 meters (50.12).

Kurtis Brondyke of The Other Guys Track Club is the leader with 3,928 points, followed by Taylor Sanderson, who is competing unattached (3,793) and Heitland (3,563). Ben Cuvelier of Wartburg is 11th with 3,197 points.

In the women’s heptathlon, UNI’s Lauren Frederick is in fourth place with 2,949 points, Wartburg’s Courtney Sowle is fifth (2,756), UNI’s Brooke Lorenz is seventh (2,474) and Panther Amanda Wiebke is eighth (2,232). Alex Gochenour is the leader with 3,526 points.

Frederick’s day included thirds in the 100 hurdles (14.50), high jump (5-1.75) and shot put (34-10.25) and a fifth in the 200 (26.33).

The multi-events competitions conclude Thursday.
