CEDAR FALLS — Northern Iowa won nine individual events and the men’s team title as the Panthers hosted the Mark Messersmith Invitational track and field meet Saturday in the UNI-Dome.
UNI’s men finished with 146.5 points to edge Indiana State with 133 points in a seven-team field. The Panther women finished second to Indiana State, 163-118.
UNI got wins in both the men’s and women’s high jump with Xavior Williams going 6-6.75 and Kassidy Sharp clearing 5-5. Isaac Holtz won the shotput (56-1), Isaiah Trousil took the 60 (6.84) and the 200 (21.93), Seb Gearhart won the 800 (1:54.31), Jacob Smith captured the 400 (48.53), and Maddie Bell won the women’s 400 (56.52).
In relay action, UNI’s Jojo Frost, Smith, Evan Long and Sven Van Den Bergh turned a 3:16.01 to win the 4x400.
Friday, UNI wrapped up a powerful performance at its Jack Jennett Open by winning 12 events.
On the women’s side, Panther winners were Lauren Frederick in the pentathlon (3,545 points), Allison Griffin in the shotput (46-8.75), Sarah Pate in the weight throw (61-6.25), Jaylynn Sharp in the high jump (5-1), Lauren Sayles in the triple jump (36-1.50), Jasmine Blue in the 60 (7.79), Bell in the 200 (25.16) and Kelsey Leedy in the 3,000 (10:30.46).
For the men, Thomas Yezek won the shotput (58-2.50), Connor Ham took the 60 hurdles (8.06), Smith won the 200 (22.11), and Corey Hertz captured the 400 (49.33).
