University of Northern Iowa linebacker Jared Farley is a finalist for the 2017 Buck Buchanan Award presented each year to the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Farley, a senior from Cedar Falls, has racked up 109 tackles this season, along with one quarterback sack, one interception and two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
The Buchanan Award winner will be announced Jan. 5 in Frisco, Texas, on the eve of the national championship game. UNI’s Karter Schult became the first Panther to win the honor last season.
Iowa State receiver Allen Lazard has accepted an invitation to play in the Reese’s Senior Bowl Jan. 27 in Mobile, Alabama.
A senior from Urbandale, Lazard leads the Cyclones in receptions (55), receiving yards (704) and touchdown receptions (nine). He is Iowa State’s all-time leader in career receptions (225), receiving yards (3,123) and 100-yard receiving games (11) while his 25 career TD receptions ranks second.
Lazard has also caught a pass in all 46 games of his college career, the longest active streak among FBS players.
Iowa State cornerback Brian Peavy and kicker Garrett Owens earned weekly Big 12 Conference honors Monday following Saturday’s 23-13 win at Baylor.
Peavy was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week after making 10 tackles with two for loss and a strip and fumble recovery on the Iowa State 2-yard line.
Owens was named Special Teams Player of the Week after hitting all three of his field goal attempts and both PAT tries.
Wartburg College quarterback Matt Sacia is one of 10 semifinalists for the 2017 Gagliardi Trophy that is presented to the most outstanding football player in Division III.
Sacia has led the Knights to an 11-0 record and the quarterfinals of the Division III playoffs. He has passed for 2,552 yards and 28 touchdowns with just three interceptions and ranks seventh in Division III passing efficiency.
The field will be reduced to four finalists Dec. 5, and the winner will be announced Dec. 13 in Salem, Va.
Iowa State guard Nick Weiler-Babb was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Week Monday following his MVP performance while leading the Cyclones to the championship of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament.
Weiler-Babb, a junior, averaged 17.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists in the tournament.
