College wrestling: Wartburg wins 200th consecutive IIAC dual

DECORAH — It all started in 1994.

Scoring bonus points in all 10 matches, second-ranked Wartburg College won its 200th consecutive Iowa Conference dual Thursday with a 53-0 victory over Luther College.

The Knights (12-2 overall, 3-0 in the IIAC) registered their first shutout of Luther since 2012 and their 34th consecutive win against the Norse.

The 200-dual win streak, interestingly enough, also started against Luther, a 48-0 win on Dec. 1, 1994. The last time Wartburg lost an IIAC dual was to Buena Vista on Feb. 10, 1994.

“As a coach you are always focused on the next practice, the next competition,” Wartburg head coach Eric Keller said. “It’s a milestone. Milestones kind of enforce you to look up and see what’s going on.

“This is special. It is special because of every single guy who has been a part of it and what it has meant to each of those guys over the last 24 years.”

The Knights registered three falls — Mike Ross at 165, Eric Devos at 174 and Tyler Lutes at 184, three technical falls — Brady Kyner at 125, Brock Rathbun at 1323 and Kyle Fank at 197.

Cross Cannone at 149 and Bowen Wileman at 285 each scored major decisions, while Wartburg received forfeits at 141 and 157.

“Again, it is special. I love shutouts, but there are things we can be better at,” Keller added. “Tomorrow, it is back to work and focusing on what we need to be better at for our next one.”

Wartburg will send several wrestlers to the Cornell Mat Man Invite Saturday, and the full team will return to action on Jan. 20 in Storm Lake at the IIAC Duals.

In Division II action in Fayette, 10th-ranked Upper Iowa improved to 6-3 with a 30-6 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead In Northern Sun Conference action.

The Peacocks got technical falls from Josh Walker at 133 and Damian Penichet at 149, and a major decision from Nick Baumler at 197.
