College women's basketball: Wartburg is IIAC champ, NCAA-bound

WAVERLY — Wartburg College raced past Luther 81-68 in the championship game of the Iowa Conference women’s basketball tournament Saturday to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.

The ninth-ranked Knights, who were also the regular-season champions, got another big game from junior Katie Sommer, who poured in 27 points to go with eight assists and six rebounds.

Aryn Jones added 15 points, Miranda Murphy 11 and Morgan Neuendorf and Kristie Sommer 10 each for Wartburg, which will take a 25-2 record into its second straight NCAA Tournament.

Luther (17-8) trailed just 22-21 after the opening period, but struggled to score in the second and third quarters as the Knights built a 57-45 lead.

The Norse shot just 29 percent from the field in the second half and were just 5 of 24 from 3-point range for the game.
