CEDAR RAPIDS — Top-seeded Wartburg College rallied for a 7-3 victory over Coe College Thursday to advance in the winner’s bracket of the Iowa Conference baseball tournament.

After Jacob Thumann staked the Knights (29-12) to a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, Wartburg watched as the Kohawks (22-17) rallied for three runs in the third, two of them unearned.

The home run was Thumann’s school-career record 31st.

Wartburg would tie it in the fifth on run-scoring sacrifice fly by Thumann that plated Eric Willis, who led off the inning with a double. The Knights took the lead for good in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Mike Brown, and an RBI-single by Willis.

Max Langheinrich worked seven innings to improve to 6-1 with the victory. He struck out seven.

Wartburg faces Buena Vista today at 1 p.m. as conference tournament action continues.

In its tournament opener, Luther saw Coe’s Thomas Schaedel throw a complete game allowing just six hits and striking out eight as Kohawks topped the Norse, 3-1.

Luther (25-16) face Central today in an elimination game.
