MICHELLE HOLT

CEDAR FALLS -- In Craig Cohea’s letter “Sign of disgust” (Aug. 9) he makes points that may be his opinion but are not facts. The Black Lives Matter organization is not a “Marxist” group with the goal of destroying the “family unit” and “western values.” BLM, a social justice movement, was started by three women after George Zimmerman was acquitted of the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. BLM is a global network of people who seek racial justice and equality. If they seek to destroy anything, it’s the systemic racism in our nation. A quick Google search will tell you about the founding members and what they truly stand for.

I display a BLM sign to show I care about Black lives and I recognize the injustices that have been part of our country. I want my students to live quality lives without being judged by their skin color. When I spot BLM signs I see people who have empathy for fellow humans. Just because we care about Black lives doesn’t mean we have disrespect for positive policing or other lives are less important. We seek balanced scales, equal to how you and I are treated as white people.
