I keep hearing that my individual liberties are being threatened under President Barack Obama and that America is heading down the “wrong path.”
Every time I hear this I say to myself, “I’d better look into that. I certainly don’t want my individual liberties to be threatened or to be heading down the wrong path!”
But one thing leads to another: a good game on television, or a happy hour somewhere, and I forget.
So, I decided to take some time today to take stock of my jeopardized liberties, and to look at this slippery slope we are on, caused by … what was it? Oh yeah! Obama’s socialist takeover of America.
One thing that really irritates me right off the bat is that I’ve lost the right to complain about my stocks that tanked in 2008. I had enjoyed telling people how much I’d lost because it made me part of the national economic concern and I felt fellowship. Unfortunately, after four years of that czar in the White House, I’m up again and I’ve lost the reassuring feeling I got from the communal struggle.
A letter from my bank was delivered that said my mortgage rate had gone down. That’s unfortunate because now I won’t have as much interest to write off.
An email arrived from my friend Steve, a writer, who has been without health insurance for 10 years, and he’s telling me that Obamacare will afford him coverage next year — and that angers me! I like Steve, but, if he really cared about his family he wouldn’t have chosen such a lazy profession. I mean seriously — a writer? Sure, he’s written some television shows during better times that entertained millions, but, who can’t do that?
I always thought that he should have taken the manager’s job at Burger King that he was offered after college because the benefits were generously mediocre.
I’d love to complain about losing the rite of spring, but, weather might be hard to pin on the president. And, truth be told, I only had to shovel my driveway once last winter, and I rather liked that. If I didn’t already know that the scientific community was comprised of loser nerds, I’d think there was some validity to that tree-hugger/socialist “climate change” scam.
There was a magazine in my dentist’s office with an article about President Obama’s foreign policies regarding the ending of combat operations in Iraq, as well as the ending of Osama Bin Laden. This is distressing because, along with drawing down troops in Afghanistan, I’ve lost some wonderful liberal talking points about war escalation.
Indeed, we are on the wrong path if our goal is to create more enemies so that we can increase the military spending that drives the debt even higher and forces us to reduce the social spending that actually helps Americans to live rather than die. That is the goal, right?
The truth is I’m lucky. I have a good job and too many Americans don’t, but I can assure everyone that it wasn’t the Affordable Health Care Act or the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that stifled job creation. And it wasn’t a lack of leadership from the White House that stopped the passing of sensible background checks for purchasing firearms; it was something more sinister and it rhymes with “Republican obstructionism.” Okay, it is Republican obstructionism.
Don’t get me wrong, there are things I’m unhappy about. I don’t like any suspension of habeas corpus, or civilian casualties from drone attacks, warrantless wiretapping, or insufficient security at U.S. embassies. I didn’t like any of those things under previous presidents either, but, what I really don’t like are double standards from either party to absolve them from shared accountability. (For the record, the last Bush administration outpaces Obama 3 to1 in terms of “scandals”).
But I digress. Like I said, I’m lucky, and the biggest downer in my day so far has been watching CNN and hearing angry jeers from a fundraising event called “Stand Up America!” One guy actually did stand up to holler, “Stop this Communist takeover of America!”
I wish I’d been there because the $1,500-a-plate dinner looked divine!
