WAVERLY | The Shades of Rhythm Amphitheater Project in Waverly's Kohlmann Park took a giant leap forward this month with a $78,000 grant awarded by Vision Iowa’s River Enhancement Community Attraction and Tourism program.

"Community and business suppport were instrumental in this generous grant," said Sharon Cashman, who spearheaded the RECAT grant application last summer with assistance from the city’s Leisure Services department, Chamber of Commerce and Greater Waverly Municipal Band.

The project will provide a 18-by-90-foot outdoor amphitheater in Kohlmann Park for summer concerts by the Municipal Band and other groups interested in using the space. When not in use, the facility, designed by Waverly native Ann Cashman and Darian Lu as an award-winning student architectural project at Iowa State University, will serve as a distinctive landmark.

Cashman said the Vision Iowa board awarded the entire $78,000 request for the project and noted that board members said they were impressed by the unique and attractive design and the site chosen for the structure. The RECAT Program supports projects that promote and enhance recreational opportunities on or near rivers and lakes within cities.

"This grant will allow us to start bidding out the project and potentially to have it completed by spring 2014, in time for the start of the summer Concerts in Kohlmann series," Cashman said.

The award is contingent upon completion of fundraising for the facility within 90 days of signing the contract. Cashman said the project is within $50,000 of its $300,000 goal thanks to generous donations and pledges from businesses and individuals, including two $20,000 commitments.

"Right now, it’s important for persons who pledged and those still planning to donate to the project to complete their gifts as soon as possible," Cashman said, adding that donations made before the end of the year can qualify as 2013 tax deductions.

Those interested in donating may contact Leisure Services Director Tab Ray at 352-6263, or P.O. Box 616, Waverly, 50677.
