WINNESHIEK COUNTY -- Two teenage sisters were killed when their car crossed the center line and collided with a pick-up truck Monday morning.
Avery Arneson, 17, and Aiden Arneson, 13, both of Decorah, were pronounced dead at Winneshiek County Hospital.
Three other passengers in their vehicle -- Jack Arneson, 15, Alexander Arneson, 14, and James Arneson, 14, all of Decorah -- were injured in the crash and taken to area hospitals.
The driver of the pickup -- Gage Dahlberg, 15, of Decorah -- was also injured and transported to Winneshiek County Hospital by ambulance.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Avery Arneson was driving a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero northbound on County Road W40 at around 8:30 a.m. Monday when she lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center line and slid sideways.
That's when a 2008 Ford F-150 pick-up driven southbound by Dahlberg hit the passenger side of the Alero.
According to Facebook posts, Avery Arneson was a senior at Mabel-Canton High School. The other four passengers appear to be her younger brothers and sister -- Jack, a ninth-grader this year, Alex and James, both in eighth grade and Aiden was in seventh grade.
They all attended Mabel-Canton schools in Mabel, Minn., according to Facebook, and County Road W40 would appear to be the route the siblings were taking to school from their Decorah home on Monday.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up for the Arneson family by Allie Schlader of Decorah and said funds raised would help pay for funeral and medical expenses.
