WATERLOO | Families with children who have disabilities and special needs may attend the Up With Families Weekend on Saturday and Sunday at the Ramada Inn and Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center.

This is the 22nd year for the family enrichment weekend.

The event provides an opportunity for parents to discuss issues they face, obtain information, resources and insights with a variety of professionals and other families.

Parents will hear from speakers such as Tyler Green who created an Ability Awareness video and website, imtyler.org., and his mother, Gina Green, an early access coordinator for AEA-267.

Sunday children will get to have breakfast with characters from the Iowa League of Heroes, a group of professional entertainers who dress as superheroes with the goal of making kids smile.

Total cost per family including lodging, meals, materials and recreational activities is $400, but each family is only asked to provide a $25 registration fee. Because the event is volunteer-driven, the weekend is limited to 20 families with children who have disabilities and special needs.

Volunteers are still needed. Additional information is available at www.facebook.com/groups/162829360415951 or call 215-9026.
