WATERLOO -- The Salvation Army of Waterloo/Cedar Falls' Family Thrift Store, at 415 E. Seventh St., has reopened after unexpectedly having to close in November due to falling duct work.

During the overnight hours of Nov. 8, a main portion of the store's duct work broke loose of its supports, falling through the drop ceiling above the sales floor. The duct work not only brought down a portion of the ceiling, but insulation and lights as well.

Lt. Natalie Austin of The Salvation Army said, "We are blessed the event occurred after hours. The safety of our customers and staff is of the utmost importance. Their concern and patience during this incident has been greatly appreciated."

The store remained closed to the general public through November while the cause of the failure was investigated. Until licensed contractors and insurance adjustors evaluated the damage, staff was reassigned to other Salvation Army positions. Once the store was deemed safe for personnel, The Salvation Army staff cleaned the debris and removed the impacted clothing as repairs were made.

The Family Thrift Store officially reopened Thursday, several days ahead of schedule.

Donations are again being accepted at the Family Thrift Store. The public is invited to shop Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
