John E. Rains
October 3, 1923 — July 14, 2019
WATERLOO — John Edward Rains, 95, formerly of Waterloo, died July 14, at the Chula Vista VA Home in Chula Vista, Calif.
He was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Eldon, Mo., son of William and Addie Mae (Hutton) Rains. On June 19, 1945, he married Virginia Billings. She preceded him in death in 2000.
John attended a one-room school house. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps until 1945 and was stationed in Saipan and Hawaii. He worked at Rath Packing for 31 years, and also farmed, painted houses, and roofed houses. John and Virginia moved to San Diego in 1988. After Virginia’s death, John moved to the Chula Vista VA Home. He was a member of Grace Brethren Church.
Survived by: a son, John (Pat) Rains of San Diego; two daughters, Jeanne Latting of Cedar Rapids and Janet (Jeff) Gales of Van Horne; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; a son, Craig Rains; and seven siblings, Elsie, Curt, Lillian, Ruby, Opal, Bernice and Harry.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday, July 22, at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Waterloo VFW. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at the funeral home.

Juliana M. "Julie" Horstman
April 5, 1937 — July 17, 2019
CEDAR FALLS — Juliana M. “Julie” Horstman, 82, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, July 17, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
She was born April 5, 1937, in Lane, Kan., the daughter of Curtis J. and Genevieve (Kress) Peine. She married Merlyn “Butch” Horstman on April 2, 1955, in Webster City. They later divorced.
Julie was a graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Waterloo, where she interned with the FBI in Washington, D.C., between her junior and senior years. She worked at Viking Pump Co. in Cedar Falls for 21 years, retiring in 1999.
Survived by: a daughter, Linda (Scott) Trimbell of Cedar Falls; three sons, Steve Horstman of Waterloo, and Brad (Barb) Horstman and Chris Horstman, both of Cedar Falls; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Coena (Joe) Iacovone of Coral Springs, Fla., and Jeannie George of Urbandale.
Preceded in death by: her parents; a son, Michael Horstman; her brother, Wally Peine; her sister, Rita Buckingham; a brother-in-law, Lee George; and her special friend, Jim Webrand.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where a 2 p.m. rosary service will be conducted. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Monday.

Shan A. Chase
Shan Abram Chase, 45 of Coralville, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, July 12, 2019 at his home.
He was born April 15, 1974, in Iowa City, son of Steve and Christine McDermott.
Shan graduated from Waterloo West High School with the class of 1992. He then attended Hawkeye Tech.
He was united in marriage to Eric Steffens on December 6, 2016 in Iowa City.
Shan was a server at Old Chicago in Coralville, most recently he served at the Mellow Mushroom in Coralville. Shan had a passion for reading and would read books for hours. He always brought a smile and a lot of laughter to his family and friends. He will be missed by all, especially his husband Eric and cat Brenda.
Survived by: His spouse Eric Chase of Coralville, his father Steve McDermott of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: His mother Christine McDermott.

Manuel Seenster Jr.
WATERLOO — Manuel Seenster Jr., 80, of Waterloo, died Sunday, July 14, of natural causes.
He was born Nov. 18, 1938, in Holmes County, Durant, Miss., son of William Seenster and Leona Ware. He married Helen Thomas Myles on Oct. 11, 1968, in Galena, Ill.
Manuel worked for John Deere for 30 years in the Foundry/Tractor Works, retiring in 1991. He also was an entrepreneur, co-owner of Sookie’s Restaurant for more than 38 years and a landlord of properties.
He was a founding member of Koinonia Ministries Full Gospel Baptist Church, where he served as chairperson of the deacon Ministry, trustee and Sunday school teacher, as well as singing on the TNT Praise Team.
Survived by: his wife; children, Rosa (Reginald) Brooks of Cedar Hill, Texas, Manuel Seenster of Postville and Maneca Seenster of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren, Mardale, Nicholas, Robert, Parys, Tyreese, Isaiah, Latika, Christian, Shatesha, Manisha, Branayla, Mckenna and Manuel III; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, the Rev. William (Dr. Nora) Seenster of Oklahoma City; two sisters-in-law, Deacon Ginger Shirley of Waterloo and Charlotte Monroe of Freeport, Ill.; a brother-in-lw, Marvin Monroe of Waterloo; a special friend, Jesters Howard of Waterloo; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by: his parents; and a great-grandbaby.
Homegoing Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Koinonia Ministries FGB Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 19, and for an hour before services Saturday, all at the church. Sanders Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Fishing and hunting were some of his favorites things, plus playing cards and enjoying friends. He loved to cook. He was truly a Village Dad, Superman, Daddy Man, Uncle Man and Pa-Pa. And to the wife he cherished, he was her Boon! He really loved his family, church family and community.
